Introduction

Lubrication is one of the most important but frequently underestimated factors in high-speed metal circular sawing.

During every cutting cycle, each saw tooth enters the workpiece, removes material and exits the cutting zone within a very short period of time. At high cutting speeds, this process creates friction, heat and a large volume of chips.

If lubrication is insufficient or incorrectly applied, manufacturers may experience:

· accelerated saw blade wear;

· tooth chipping;

· material adhesion on the cutting edge;

· excessive burr formation;

· unstable cut surfaces;

· higher spindle load;

· shorter blade life;

· increased cost per cut.

For this reason, choosing a lubrication system should be considered part of the complete sawing process rather than simply an accessory option on the machine.

Two common approaches used on metal circular saws are Minimum Quantity Lubrication (MQL), also known as near-dry lubrication, and continuous cutting-oil spray or flood lubrication.

Which system is better?

The answer depends on the material, workpiece geometry, saw blade, cutting parameters and production requirements.

What Is Minimum Quantity Lubrication (MQL)?

Minimum Quantity Lubrication uses a controlled amount of lubricant combined with compressed air and delivers it directly to the cutting zone.

Instead of flooding the entire blade and workpiece with cutting fluid, MQL focuses lubricant where it is actually needed:

at the interface between the saw teeth and the material.

In a high-speed circular saw machine, one or more nozzles are normally positioned close to the blade entry zone. The objective is to create a stable and accurately directed lubricant supply to the saw teeth.

Cold-saw blade manufacturers offer dedicated mist oils for circular saw applications, including different lubricant options for mild steel, stainless steel and non-ferrous materials.

The primary functions of MQL include:

· reducing friction;

· reducing material adhesion;

· improving tooth engagement;

· lowering cutting resistance;

· reducing lubricant consumption;

· keeping chips and workpieces relatively clean.

In simple terms:

MQL focuses primarily on precision lubrication rather than cooling the complete cutting area with a large volume of fluid.

What Is a Continuous Cutting-Oil Spray System?

A continuous cutting-oil system uses a pump and nozzles to deliver a significantly larger flow of cutting fluid around the saw blade and cutting zone.

Its functions normally include:

Lubrication + cooling + chip flushing.

Because more liquid passes through the cutting area, this type of system can provide stronger heat removal and help carry chips away from the blade.

This can be useful when cutting large solid bars, difficult materials or applications with long cutting times.

However, an important distinction should be made between straight cutting oil and water-miscible coolant.

Straight cutting oil provides excellent lubrication, while water-based coolants generally provide greater cooling capacity.

Therefore, simply describing a system as “flood lubrication” does not fully define its performance. The type and formulation of the cutting fluid are also important.

Why Are More High-Speed Circular Saws Using MQL?

Modern production lines are increasingly evaluated on total manufacturing cost rather than machine cycle time alone.

A high-speed circular saw may perform hundreds or thousands of cuts every day. In this environment, lubricant consumption, chip handling, cleaning and downstream processing can become significant costs.

This is where MQL can provide important advantages.

1. Lower Lubricant Consumption

A conventional flood system continuously circulates a relatively large volume of fluid.

MQL applies lubricant only where it is required.

Instead of asking:

“How much does one drum of cutting oil cost?”

manufacturers should ask:

“How much lubricant do we consume per ton of material cut?”

This provides a much better picture of real production cost.

2. Cleaner Chips

When large quantities of cutting oil are used, metal chips can retain considerable amounts of fluid.

This may create additional requirements for:

· chip draining;

· oil recovery;

· cleaning;

· waste-fluid management;

· housekeeping.

With properly adjusted MQL, chips are generally much closer to dry condition and are therefore easier to collect and recycle.

Cold-saw technology suppliers have also highlighted reduced lubrication oil and the elimination of sawing sludge as potential advantages of high-speed cold-sawing systems.

3. Better Integration With Automated Production
