In a metal cutting workshop, many machine failures do not happen suddenly.

A machine may run normally for months before one day developing abnormal spindle temperature, unstable feeding, motor overload, unexpected alarms or even a complete shutdown. After inspection, the root cause may turn out to be something as simple as lubricant that has not been replaced for too long or an electrical contact that has gradually oxidized.

These are the hidden risks of lubrication and electrical systems.

They often do not affect production immediately. Instead, the problem accumulates gradually. By the time the operator notices an obvious abnormality, a simple maintenance task may already have become a major repair.

For circular saw machines, band saw machines and other metal cutting equipment, preventive maintenance is therefore not an optional extra. It is an important part of maintaining long-term machine stability.

1. Why Are Lubrication Problems Easy to Ignore?

Lubrication problems usually do not stop a machine immediately.

For example, lubricating oil may gradually age, become contaminated or lose its original performance after long-term operation. The machine may still run, but friction and temperature may gradually increase at gears, bearings, guideways and chains.

What the operator sees is:

“The machine is still running normally."

What may actually be happening inside the machine is:

“Wear is gradually accumulating."

Once the wear reaches a certain level, it may appear as abnormal noise, increased temperature, unstable movement, reduced accuracy or even component failure.

This is why one of the most important principles of lubrication maintenance is:

2. Gearbox: Change the Lubricating Oil According to the Maintenance Cycle

The gearbox is an important part of the machine's transmission system. The condition of the lubricating oil directly affects gears and other transmission components.

According to the specified maintenance requirements:

  • Change the gearbox oil after the first 15 days of operation.
  • Change the oil every 180 days thereafter.

A common situation in factories is that the first oil change is completed carefully, but later changes are gradually delayed because the machine continues to operate normally.

This can create potential risks.

Lubricating oil should not be considered usable simply because there is still oil in the gearbox. Its condition changes as operating time increases, so it should be inspected and replaced according to the specified maintenance schedule.

It is recommended to include gearbox oil changes in the machine maintenance checklist and record:

  • Previous oil change date
  • Current operating time
  • Lubricant specification
  • Next scheduled oil change

This helps prevent maintenance from being forgotten when operators change or production becomes busy.

3. Guideways and Chains: Daily Lubrication Matters

Compared with gearbox oil changes, guideway and chain lubrication is even easier to overlook.

The reason is simple: the lubrication process appears relatively easy, and these components may continue working even when lubrication is insufficient.

However, metal cutting environments often contain:

  • Metal dust
  • Cutting chips
  • Coolant or lubricating media
  • Long periods of continuous operation

Without sufficient lubrication, friction and resistance may gradually increase and affect the stability of feeding and other moving mechanisms.

Therefore, guideways and chains should be lubricated daily.

The maintenance task itself is simple, but it needs to become a fixed routine.

A practical daily procedure is:

Clean → Inspect → Lubricate → Confirm operation

This is far more effective than waiting for abnormal movement and repairing the machine afterward.

4. Spindle Bearings: Pay Attention to High-Temperature Operating Conditions

Spindle bearings are critical moving components in metal cutting equipment.

During high-speed cutting, the spindle and bearings continuously operate under rotational speed and working loads. Insufficient lubrication or unsuitable grease conditions can increase friction and lead to abnormal temperature rise.

Therefore, the spindle bearings should be lubricated with high-temperature lithium-based grease according to the equipment maintenance requirements.

One important point should be remembered:

More grease does not necessarily mean better lubrication.

Over-greasing can also create problems. The correct grease type, quantity and lubrication method should therefore follow the equipment maintenance requirements.

For spindle bearings, maintenance personnel should pay attention to:

  • Lubrication intervals
  • Grease specification
  • Grease quantity
  • Bearing operating temperature
  • Abnormal noise

If bearing temperature or noise becomes noticeably different from normal conditions, simply adding more grease should not be considered the only solution. The actual cause should be investigated.

5. Electrical Systems: Problems Can Accumulate Out of Sight

Compared with mechanical components, electrical systems are often overlooked during routine maintenance.

Electrical control cabinets are usually enclosed, so operators rarely open them when the machine is operating normally.

However, long-term operation can expose electrical systems to:

  • Dust accumulation
  • Moisture
  • Temperature changes
  • Loose connections
  • Oxidation of electrical contacts

These conditions may not cause an immediate failure but can gradually lead to poor contact, unstable control signals or intermittent alarms.

6. Control Cabinet Cleaning: Do Not Wait for a Failure

Dust accumulating inside an electrical control cabinet can affect heat dissipation and increase operational risks for electrical components.

The control cabinet should therefore be inspected and cleaned regularly according to the operating environment and maintenance requirements.

This is particularly important in metalworking environments where dust and fine particles are present.

During maintenance:

Always disconnect the power before inspection or cleaning.

The cleaning method should also be appropriate for electrical components to avoid secondary damage.

7. Oxidized Contactor Contacts: A Small Problem Can Affect the Whole Machine

Contactors are common components in industrial electrical control systems.

After long-term use, their contacts may become oxidized, burned or otherwise degraded.

Early symptoms may include:

  • Intermittent startup failure
  • Unstable motor operation
  • Abnormal contactor noise
  • Occasional machine alarms

If these signs are ignored, a small electrical issue may eventually develop into a production-affecting failure.

Therefore, contactor contacts should be inspected regularly during preventive maintenance. Obvious oxidation, burning or abnormal contact conditions should be addressed promptly.

8. Grounding: Easy to Ignore, but Important

Proper grounding is an important foundation for electrical safety and stable equipment operation.

During routine inspections, the grounding connection should be checked to confirm that it remains secure and effective.

It is better to include “Confirm proper grounding" as a standard checklist item rather than waiting until an electrical problem occurs.

9. Build a Simple Preventive Maintenance System

Effective maintenance does not mean performing complicated work every day. The key is to establish a fixed schedule for critical maintenance tasks.

A basic maintenance system can include:

Lubrication and electrical maintenance may seem like small tasks, but they have a significant impact on long-term equipment stability.

A timely oil change may prevent transmission problems later.

A simple control cabinet cleaning may help prevent electrical component problems caused by the operating environment.

A contactor inspection may identify a potential control issue before it affects production.

For metal cutting equipment, truly efficient maintenance is not:

“Repair it when it breaks."

It is:

“Identify problems while they are still developing."

When lubrication schedules, electrical inspections and routine checks become part of a standardized maintenance system, equipment maintenance no longer depends entirely on the experience of a single operator. Instead, it becomes a process that can be performed, recorded and tracked.

That is the real value of preventive maintenance.
